Description
Traditional high-gloss transparent varnish based on a special blend of modified linseed oil, wood oil and phenolic resins. It is suitable both for indoor and outdoor use above the waterline, due to its effective filter ultra-violet rays, which protects the wood against the sun's rays in all climates. Due to its unique composition, it is suitable for all types of wooden constructions and is especially recommended for the varnishing of flexible wood constructions. It provides exceptional fluidity, superior brightness and depth, optimal weather resistance, water resistance and shine retention.
Technical data
- Drying time at 18ºC / 65ºF and 65% relative air humidity: dust-free after 3 hours - sanding after 24 hours - recoverable after 24 hours.
- Performance: approx. 14 m2 / liter
- Recommended solvent: Brush application: Epifanesolve Paint & Varnish solvent or good quality turpentine. Spray application: Epifanes pistol solvent for Paint & Varnish
Preparation of new wood
The new wood must be dry and well degreased with Epifanes paint thinner for Paint & Varnish. If necessary, sandthe wood and if you want to dye it, use a water-based dye. p>
Recommended system for varnishing new wood
- 1st layer: diluted to 50% sand with dry paper grain 220 li>
- 2nd layer: diluted to 25% sand with dry paper grain 220 li>
- 3rd layer: diluted to 15% sanding with dry paper grain 280 li>
- 4th-8th layer: diluted to 0-5% sand with dry paper or water 400 grit or finer
The first 3 layers are applied to saturate the grain of the wood and to establish a good adhesion with the wood surface. By diluting the first coat to 50% the varnish is completely absorbed by the grain of the wood, thus allowing the tip of the grain to rise and form a rough surface. Once the surface is dry, smooth it until it is smooth again. The final layers are applied with very little solvent, using a clean bristle brush, long, soft and of good quality. Remove loose hair from new brushes by rubbing them on abrasive paper. Between the various layers of varnish, sand by hand with very fine grain paper. Areas that are susceptible to wear, such as edges for example, require two additional layers. Additional layers are also recommended when the boat is subjected to very frequent use or there are extreme circumstances during navigation or weathering.
Varnished wood varnishing
In this case it is not required that the first layer be diluted to 50%. Follow the instructions of the above mentioned system from the second layer onwards.
Maintenance of varnished works
The varnish is more subject to the effects of ultra-violet light than paint. For this reason, the annual application of one or more maintenance layers is recommended. It is also used for the maintenance of all systems of varnishes and oils of one or two components. If the varnish system is still intact and only shows a loss of gloss, degrease the surface with 280-320 grain solvent. Small areas that require repair can be filled by applying several coats of varnish. Once dry, gently sand the repaired areas until they are level, remove all residues and apply one or more maintenance layers on the entire surface.
