Description
The acetone (CH3COCH3) is a volatile, colorless solvent highly pure product in the cumene process - phenol, is completely miscible in water and most organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, hydrocarbons, esters, ketones liquid and fatty acids. It has a characteristic odor and is highly flammable.
Applications
Acetone is a good solvent for both natural and synthetic oils, resins, gums and waxes, it is particularly used in the extraction and purification of a wide range of organic products.
Given its high solvent power, it is extremely recommended for the production of coating materials, printing inks and adhesives.
Acetone is also used as an intermediate in the preparation of various industrial chemicals, for example isopropanol, diacetone alcohol, isophorone and diphenylolpropane.
Applications
Acetone is a highly flammable liquid, flash point, -178ºC, and its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air.
It should be stored in classified outside the scope of any source of ignition and explosion-proof equipment handled areas. In large fires it can be diluted with water as mist and then attack with alcohol-resistant foam.
Small fires can be fought with chemical powder. If water is used, this should preferably be shaped better than the spray jet.
The acetone has a relatively low degree of toxicity. It is necessary, however, to have good ventilation in work areas to maintain acetone vapor concentration below the limit value is 1000 ppm.
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause problems acetone degreasing of the skin, which can lead to a lower risk of skin defense against possible infections. Eye contact should be washed immediately with plenty of water.
